At Avondale United Methodist Church, we aim to glorify God through worship. Worship services include relevant and inspiring sermons, music that communicates in languages beyond words, and art that supports the act of worship.
We offer a wide range of opportunities for service, from greeting worshipers to sharing your musical gifts to assisting with audio/visual equipment. Whether you prefer a traditional or contemporary style, AUMC has a place for you to serve and glorify God.
Spoken Word
Readers in Worship: As we listen to the proclamation of God's Word in scripture, we are especially open to what this message might mean for us all. It is an event we look forward to because we believe that the proclaimed Word of God is a source of grace:
"Yes--as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens, and do not return without watering the earth...so the Word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do." --Isaiah 55: 10-11
Drama: Often Jesus used verbal illustrations, parables and stories, with visual and highly dramatic effects upon the listeners. The gospels and much of the Old Testament were written in the form of stories. Our spoken word ministry utilizes dramatic readings, illustrations, and story telling to proclaim the gospel in another medium. We have great opportunities for you to use your gifts in these ways. Media Team: Our world is changing and we need new ways to communitcate the gospel faithfully and effectively. In our new and emerging culture that is highly visual and highly sensory in orientation, newer resources for communication can faithfully proclaim the gospel to newer generations. Television, movies, the Internet, and music each play vital roles in our society. Our media team tries to take advantage of the tools available to us that will allow us to communicate more effectively and in a way that is faithful and relevant. Visual Arts: There are numerous people who work behind the scenes to visually reinforce the themes from the scriptures and special events or productions. The Visual Arts team is responsible for adorning the sanctuary during special seasons like Advent and Lent according to the scriptural witness, set designs, stage decor, display pieces, and various other visuals to be used in worship. Graphic artists, seamstresses, decorators, phonotgraphers, set builders, and helpers are all essential and are welcome to join this team. Please contact Ted. tedm@avondaleumcjax.org.
Worship Support:
Greeters/Ushers: Our greeters are the first impression that a visitor gets of our church. A willingness to serve the congregation and to welcome all who enter the church with Christian hospitality are needed. Both the 8:45 am and 11:00 am services need folks who can serve in this area.
Altar Guild: Become a part of the Altar Guild, a wonderful group of very dedicated people who work diligently behind the scenes to make sure that everything is in place for the Celebration of Holy Communion.
Communion Servers: Assist the Pastor in distributing the communion elements to the congregation. We always need folks to serve!
